How Do I Transfer Without Losing Credits?

Lately, I have been working with my scholars on transferring to another college or university for several reasons:

1. The school is no longer affordable (loss of scholarship, raised tuition prices)

2. The school no longer fits their needs for their educational goals or in some cases socially.

3. They absolutely made the wrong choice and absolutely hate their school

Whatever the reason, the scholar has taken courses accordingly and that course work is worth a lot of money, time and energy. No one wants to hear upon transfer, that they will not be moving forward academically as they thought.

Sometimes, when students transfer they can lose up to 15 or more credits and in the case of a for-profit school transferring to a non-profit school losing ALL credits is common. When they would be a 1st semester Junior at their old school, they find out they are only a first semester Sophomore at their chosen new school or a Freshmen. Why? Not all of their course work was transferable to the new school. Scholars are then stuck in school for extra semesters or even years to complete the course work and core requirements of the new school.

Is it their fault? Not really. Students go in thinking that a college course is a college course. Thinking high school credits are the same every where. Not the case in college. Many for-profit schools do not have transferrable credits at all and students spend thousands only to find out that the coursework completed does not transfer to any college or university in their area. Why not? They were accepted. They did the work. Completed everything necessary to earn the credit, including paying thousands of dollars. Well, as I tell my scholars: That's not how this works. That's not how any of this works.
